Police learnt about the incident after two people, also on board, managed to safely swim to the shores.
According to a Police investigation, overloading was blamed for the tragic accident.
“The boat carried eight people in total, seven bicycles and 40 crates of beer making it over 1,000 kilograms on just a small boat that was instead supposed to be taking only 500 kilograms,” police said in a statement.
Joint forces, District authorities and members of fishing associations managed to intervene and five were found already dead.
The victims were identified as Vedaste Niyonsenga, 33, Shabani Ntibitangira, 27, Jean Bosco Hagabimana, 30, Jean Musabyimana, 33 and Emmanuel Ntawukuriryayo, 23.
Efforts are under way to find another person who is still missing.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bosco Mudacumura expressed condolences to families of the deceased.
Mudacumura urged citizens to stop travelling on water during night hours.
“It is very easy to save people during day time as this is a time when many people are moving from one place to another. Sailors should make it a point to wear life jackets,” said Mudacumura.
