Police have commenced investigations into circumstances under which 5 guns were recently stolen from homes of security personnel.
Addressing journalists on Monday at police headquarters in Naguru, police spokesman, Asan Kasingye said the incidents happened in different parts of the country.
“On 13, July 2017, as police personnel at Alwello Detach in Abim district were tending their gardens, a gun and 30 rounds of ammunition went missing plus other items,” Kasingye told a news conference, adding that Sgt. Angelos Ojok, the officer in charge of the detach who had been left to watch it has been arrested to help in investigations.
The police mouthpiece said other guns had been stolen Apac, Sheema, Abim and Bulambuli districts from homes of security personnel whereas a total of 201 rounds of ammunition had also been taken by assailants.
“The gun stolen from the home of John Kayongo, a prison warder in Amita prison centre in Abim district was later recovered,” he noted.
Cases of theft of guns are on the rise in the country with the most prominent one happening at the start of this month in Kapchorwa.
On July 5, unknown assailants attacked 33 year old Charles Olanya who was guarding a trade show at Boma grounds at night slit his throat with a panga and took off with his SMG rifle.
