4 Arrested for Vandalizing MTN, Airtel Equipment

Police in Kabale are holding four people for alleged theft and vandalism of Mobile Telecommunication Companies MTN and Airtel equipment from various sites in Kabale, pharm Kisoro and Ntungamo.

The suspects are Andrew Owamani, this a private security guard at Kabale Hospital, approved Kenneth Tumuhereze, Justus Mugisha and Elias Mugabe all from Kabale town. The suspects were found with telecom equipment like batteries and fuel jelly cans worth million of shillings.

Deo Kikomeko, the National Security Manager for American Tower Corporation-ATC, a company responsible for MTN and Airtel telecommunication sites in Uganda says that the companies have been losing equipment and fuel since January this year, until they inserted a tracking device in each of the batteries.

He says one of the batteries was tracked and found in Bugongi over the weekend, where the buyer directed them to the suspects.

He says that eight sites have been vandalized since January; which has affected service in the area, and that 12 more batteries each costing, 1.6 million shillings out of the lost 28, were recovered during the operation.

Elly Maate the Kigezi regional says that the suspects were also found with iron bars, metal cutters among other equipments which they use in their operations.

While being interviewed by our reporter at Kabale police station, the suspects gave contradicting statements but admitted that they have been selling the batteries at only one hundred thousand shillings each.
