Kibaki Jets In For Makerere Honourary Degree Ceremony

The ceremony is slated to take place tomorrow January 23 at the University.

President Kibaki graduated from Makerere in 1955 with a first class Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, History and Political Science before joining the London School of Economics for a Bachelor of Science in Public Finance where he graduated with a distinction.

Kibaki, who is also the Chairman of the East African Community (EAC), will also address members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) on Wednesday January 25.

The Kenyan leader was received on arrival at Entebbe International Airport this evening by the 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs Eriya Kategaya.

Others at the airport to receive Kibaki included the Speaker of East African Legislative Assembly, Abddirahim Abdi, the Vice-chancellor of Makerere University, Professor Venansius Baryamureeba, UPDF Air Force Commander Lt. General Jim Owoyesigire and the Deputy Inspector General of Police Okoth Ochola.

Kibaki is accompanied by the Minister for East African Affairs Musa Sirma and the Deputy Minister for Higher Education Margaret Kamara.

Kibaki’s arrival comes hardly a week after former South Africa President Thabo Mbeki made a presentation at the same campus.

President Yoweri Museveni and many others have received honourary degrees at the University.
