S.Sudan vice President Riek Machar Teny told press today Tuesday in Juba Arthor was nailed in a special commando operation in Morobo near the country’s capital.
Earlier in the day, Athor was reported to be under siege by South Sudan’s army, SPLA, in Morobo, Central Equatoria state.
Reports started filtering in today morning that Arthor had survived an assassination attempt.
Athor defected from his position in the southern army – known as the SPLA – in 2010 to run for governor in Jonglei state.
After losing the vote, Athor launched a revolt against the southern government along with over 5,000 troops.
He was reportedly being sponsored by President Gen. Omar Al Bashir.
Since 2010, Athor had been fighting the Presidency of Salva Kiir whom he accused of corruption.
Before he fled to the bush, Athor was the deputy chief of staff in the SPLA.
Kiir recently said Athor posed the biggest security threat in the region.
