BREAKING: Kagonyera Earns 4 More Years As Mak Chancellor

“There shall be a Chancellor for each Public University who shall be appointed by the President on recommendation of the University Council,” the Act reads.

Section 30 (3) of the same Act also stipulates that the Chancellor is the titular head of the University and as shall preside at all ceremonial assemblies of the University, and in the name of the University, confer degrees and other academic titles and distinctions of that University.

Namisango says the decision of the Council will see the extension of Kagonyera’s term of office for a staggering four years (October 23 to October 2015).

Museveni, the visitor of Makerere University, appointed Kagonyera as Chancellor of the oldest higher institution of learning in Uganda for a period of four years October 23 2007 to October 2011.

Namisango says following the end of Prof. Kagonyera’s first term as Chancellor on October 23 2011, the University Council, which is the supreme governing body of the University, has today Friday convened a special meeting to discuss the position of the Chancellor.

“During the deliberations, the Council was guided by Section 30 (2) of the Universities and other tertiary Institutions Act, which stipulates that the Chancellor shall hold office for a period of four years, but shall be eligible for re-appointment for one more term,” Namisango reveals.

“Headed by Dr. Charles Wana-Etyem, the Council also observed that Prof. Kagonyera had successfully served and executed his duties during his first reign as Chancellor,” Namisango concludes.
