“We were informed by people who saw the accident that the MP’s car overturned several times in the bush after veering off the main road,” said Savannah Region Police Spokesperson, Lamech Kigozi.

He said the lawmaker sustained “serious injuries on her head and other body parts.”

Oleru was temporarily admitted at Kasana hospital before being shifted to Nakasero hospital in Kampala.

Preliminary police investigations indicate the legislator’s car developed a brake failure immediately after the MP overtook the lorry.

In February this year, Woman Member of Parliament for Pallisa district, Hon. Amoit Judith Mary, was involved in a serious accident that nearly claimed her life as she travelled for the NRM retreat at Kyankwanzi-based National Leadership Institute.

A few years ago, Sheema district woman MP Rosemary Nyakikongoro was involved in an accident after the vehicle in which the legislator, her nephew and driver were travelling veered off the road and rolled several times.

The driver was reportedly avoiding a head on collision with an oncoming vehicle.

Government statistics show that careless driving causes 41.5 percent of accidents in Uganda.
