Joseph Sewalu, the manager Busega Twegatte SACCO, says efforts to contain the fire were fruitless.

“I was informed at around 11.30pm that our offices had been gutted by fire. Unfortunately, I found that everything had been destroyed.”

Joseph adds they lost all records of SACCO members stored on computer drives which were not spared by the blaze.

Gorreti Nakintu whose food kiosk was also burnt to ashes suspects an electric short circuit could have ignited the fireball that consumed the market which has been a source of livelihood for thousands.

“I am blaming the market’s security for not alerting police to save the market from destruction. They must have been sleeping,” charged a tearful Nakintu.

The fire left a trail of destruction at Nateete Market

Corporal Rubanga Kene, an operations officer at Busega Police Post tells Chimpreports the law enforcement body’s Fire Brigade rushed to the scene but could not do much since materials used to construct the market such as wood enabled fire to spread faster across the marketplace.

He, however, noted that Police Fire Brigade was able to contain fire from spreading to neighbouring houses and that a section of the market was saved.

Fires are rampant in Kampala. The Parking Yard section of Owino Market has been burnt several times.
