“We would like to express sympathy to the family of Eliphaz Bushaija of Rwamuhuku village, Sanga, in Kiruhura District for the demise of Enoch Rwagemu who was in April attacked by a hyena,” said UWA.
“He was treated and discharged on May 30 but last week developed acute malaria leading to his death on June 10. May his soul RIP.”
It was reported that Rwagemu was sleeping in a hut at 1:00am on April 29 when the hyena from Lake Mburo National park exploited the poor shutters to attack him.
Rwagemu attempted to fight off the hyena which bit off his left hand.
He reportedly raised an alarm, which attracted the attention of residents but the hyena had already taken off.
This is not the first time game animals have attacked residents outside the protected areas.
Early this year, stray elephants killed three people in Oyam district.
