“With peace, unity ad continued cooperation; we can do more together and overcome many challenges.”
It is hugely anticipated that Kiir and Machar will sign a peace agreement with Machar in Ethiopia on Monday to deescalate the tensions and hostilities in the war-torn country.
The agreement is expected to lay down procedures for the formation of a coalition government with the opposition and other groups.
Fighting has been raging on in South Sudan despite the two principals signing agreements for the cessation of hostilities.
Kiir said government troops would not launch any attacks on rebels to give peace a chance.
“We have ordered our forces not to lift a foot from where they are to attack rebels. Our troops will only fight in self-defence,” he noted.
The fighting which broke out in December last year has left thousands of people dead, millions displaced and others condemned to refugee camps.
Under the auspices of IGAD, it is hoped that both hostile camps will reach a political, home-grown and peaceful resolution to the conflict.
