“Moreover, it has severely curtailed the freedoms of speech and shown utter disregard to human rights. Under its watch, corruption has been institutionalized. This has substantially curbed the ability of the government to deliver the basic social services to the people of South Sudan,” charged Nazario.
Officials said the diplomat’s decision took Juba by surprise as he was a known cadre of the SPLM movement and loyal servant of President Kiir. They said Nazario was a traitor and selfish diplomat.
Information Minister Michel Lueth told Corps in Juba on Friday that Nazario voted in favour of a 2012 resolution backing the self-determination for a Palestinian state at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) before consulting Juba.
He said Nazario had on several occasions been warned against voting on motions at the United Nations before seeking government position.
However, according to Lueth, Nazario ignored this directive thus jeopardising relations with key allies including Israel and Russia.
The Palestine resolution threatened ties between Juba and Tel Aviv as Israel continues to maintain the Hamas government in check.
Lueth said Nazario’s conduct was against the best interests of South Sudan which decided to recall him to back to Juba where he would serve as Director for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs at the Foreign Ministry headquarters.
The diplomat turned down the offer and rejected the transfer order before defecting.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement seen by Chimpreports on Saturday that Nazario was never discriminated as he alleged in his resignation letter.
“With the confidence of the leadership of the country, he was transferred from Brussels to the United Nations in the capacity of deputy head of mission – another prestigious position that does not match with the person being marginalised or discriminated as he claimed,” the statement read in part.
“As a reaction to his recall, he presented himself to the media as having been intentionally victimised and opted for a leave without pay, which was granted.
The ministry would like to assure the general public that while Ambassador Francis tries to portray himself as a nationalist who cares about national issues, the fact of the matter, in the opinion of the ministry, is based on personal interest and not otherwise.”
