2016 Cecafa Women Cup Fixtures

Uganda will open the tourney against Kenya

Women football in the region has Sunday 11th made a historical mark as the 2016 CECAFA officially kicks off at the Fufa Technical Centre in Njeru near Jinja.

The ten day tournament will see seven teams clash in two groups and the best two advance for a one off semi finals and later the finals.

No prize has been mentioned yet though the organizers Fufa and Cecafa revealed they are in negotiations and could announce the developments before the opening ceremony on Sunday.

Brief history.

This is the first tournament to be played since the maiden edition in 1986 hosted and won by Zanzibar national team. It was again scheduled to take place in the same islands around 2007 but the plans botched at the eleventh hour.

The participating teams are divided into two groups A and B with the former holding four teams including hosts Uganda, web Kenya, ‘defending’ champions Zanzibar and Burundi.

Group B has Ethiopia, Tanzania and Rwanda.

Zanzibar and Burundi will kickoff the games on Sunday at 2pm just before the opening ceremony followed by the titanic clash between Uganda’s Crested Cranes against Kenya. Tanzania and Rwanda will play on Monday in the only group B game.
