Thousands of civilians are reportedly fleeing the town due to fears of a pending rebel onslaught.

On April 18, the SPLA Sector Command in Paloich under Maj. General Garang Mabil repelled a rebel assault on Renk town.

Maj Garang, said fighting lasted for more than four hours resulting in the death of eight people and injuring 20 others.

Today evening, the rebels launched another attack dislodging government troops and taking over the town.

Meanwhile, SPLA spokesperson, Col Philip Aguer, says that they are advancing from Gadiang to Ayod County.

He told the New Sudan Vision, that SPLA would capture Ayod as soon as possible.

While rebels say they took Mayom, Aguer insists that “we voluntarily withdrew from Mayom after ration shortages without a fight but now we have returned and we are fighting.”

Aguer further dismissed reports of rebels advancing on Bor town in Jonglei state saying,” How will they [rebels] advance to Bor yet they have not dislodged our forces in Gadiang?”

Fighting continues for the major strategic positions in South Sudan.
