He was later shot dead as he tried to attack soldiers escorting him to Bunia town.

“Sadala was badly injured in a shootout that claimed two army soldiers and two of his own men,” Mende was quoted as saying.

Consequently, Sadala bled to death.

According to Mende, Sadala’s followers are still out there in the bush “but they need to surrender too”.

Sadala is known for poaching, kidnapping, raping women and looting, among other crimes.

Mai Mai is one of the many militia groups that have continued to destabilise Congo.

The other groups include the defeated M23 rebels, the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) and Ugandan rebels, Allied Democratic Force (ADF).

Congo says its troops are committed to neutralising all rebels still hiding in the thick jungles of the huge African State.
