Uganda Dominates Weight Lifting Championships

Ugandan renowned lifter, Charles Ssekyaya, managed to scoop a gold medal with two silvers setting up a world record in upgrading from 255 kilometres from 265 which he had set previously.

Ugandan chances were also brightened by Silvester Luyombya who bagged a gold medal with two silvers in this event.

Uganda has fielded a team of 12 athletes where four are women.

The athletes include Ismail Katamba, Charles Sekyaya, Silvester Luyombya and Becky Namusoke who is the only female Ugandan athlete featuring in the women’s heavy weight lifting.

Salim Musoke, the President of Ugandan Weight Lifting Federation, told ChimpSport that Uganda will excel but the team needs support from Ugandans.

Seven countries are taking part in this championship with stiff competition anticipated in countries like Saudi Arabia Egypt and Libya.

The countries include, Saudi Arabia, Lybia, Egypt, Turkey, Somalia, Kenya, among others.

The championship is the first of its kind to be organised in Africa yet it’s the second to be organised in world.
