“We have been embarrassed as the people of Busoga. I recently received reports indicating that parents are forcing their young children into prostitution as a source of income for the family. Girls as young as ten years are being paid five hundred shillings for commercial sex. I think we have a very serious problem and we have to address it urgently,” she told a mammoth crowd in Namwendwa.
Speaker Kadaga tasked the Resident District Commissioners to investigate the child prostitution reports so as to save hundreds of children who may be victims of the trade.
She noted that the poverty levels in the region have contributed a lot to the increased cases of domestic violence reported within the community.
“Some of you men have abandoned your responsibilities. You marry seven women and fail to provide for the basic family needs and end up battering them. I warn you girls of Kamuli not to accept being married to men who already have several wives,” Speaker Kadaga said.
She warned young men against camping in the trading centers to play pool and games of chance.
Salaamu Musumba, the Kamuli district Chairperson urged women to take on the responsibility of uplifting the standard of livelihoods in their homes. She noted that the progress of families depends largely on the sacrifices that women make.
