“Many of the over 100 passengers of the ill-fated overloaded vessel were traders and Congolese refugees returning home, police said. They were en route to the DR Congo from Kyangwali and Bugoma in Hoima district when they encountered mechanical difficulty in Kitenile, leading to the boat capsizing.”

The victims of the accident are reportedly refugees from Kyangwale Refugee Settlement Camp in Hoima district.

The bodies, according to reports, were taken to Ntoroko Health Centre III.

The Midwestern Regional Police Commander, Mr Charles Ssembabulidde, told the Daily Monitor, that “Preliminary information indicates that the boat was transporting some Congolese refugees who boarded the boat from Bugoma landing site and were heading to Ntororo district in order for them to cross to the Democratic Republic of Congo.”

“I have been informed that 27 people have been rescued and eight bodies retrieved,” Ssembabulidde was quoted as saying.

The search for the rest is still going on.
