“We managed to recover three guns, which the thugs were using to destabilise Masaka town. One of the suspects attempted to kill our officer but our forces swiftly took him out of action in the fire exchange,” says Henry Kavuma, the District Police Commander, Masaka.

Chimpreports understands the heavy gun battle lasted about 20 minutes until the thugs surrendered to a well-trained and heavily-armed Police squad.

The law enforcement body is not taking any chances after two cops were killed in action by armged gangs this year.

What surprised Police, says Kavuma, is that three of the suspects in detention had earlier been arrested on charges of armed robbery only to be freed on bail by courts.

The trio had reportedly taken part in a series of highway robberies along Masaka-Mbarara road.

Kavuma further points out that another suspect was involved in the robbery of Petrol City fuel station in Nyendo last year.

“We are also following leads that pin private security guards for conniving with the thieves in the area,” adds Kavuma.

The suspects face charged of armed robbery, assault and illegal possession of fire arms.
