He polled in the Tuesday contest 6943 [64 percent] while Aseru only managed 1376 [12 percent] of the votes.
Bwowe’s win did not go down well with the country’s oldest political party, which had earlier branded him a traitor for refusing to step down for the primaries winner to carry the party flag.
In a tough dossier on the misunderstanding, Party President Norbert Mao called upon the young democrats and all Makerereans to reject Bwowe due to his misconduct.
“As party leaders at national level, we have decided that [Bwowe’s] defiant action manifests indiscipline and sets a bad precedent,” he said.
“Accusing the rebellious Bwowe of dividing and confusing party supporters, Mao noted, “If we turn a blind eye to this kind of impunity, the party loses, and if the party loses, we all lose.”
DP’s youth wing, however, holds a divergent view on Bwowe’s triumph.
“He is a UYD member just like is Ms Aseru. His win is our win and a plus to our chapter,” said UYD General Secretary Mr Charles Wasswa in an interview with Chimpreports on Thursday.
Asked whether this didn’t pass for an ideological point of discrepancy with their mother party, Mr Wasswa said, “UYD is an independent Youth wing only associated with DP by affiliation. We therefore cannot speak on their behalf, but our position remains that Bwowe’s win is our win.”
His triumph is largely attributed to his last year’s relentless efforts in rejection of the University’s new lurid 60% Fees policy.
He was expelled by administration but won his way back to campus via a court injunction.
“He is a fighter, and very passionate about defending the common man against ill-treatment. This is the reason gallant Makerereans voted him. We share his passion as UYD and we’ll work with him,” added Wasswa.
