“Patriotism comes from the term ‘Patria’ which means ‘motherland.’ It’s not sloganeering. It’s not a law that is passed in parliament, but an emotional feeling that comes from the inside about the things that make you celebrate and have pride in your country,” he said.

“Now, except if we say that we are proud of corruption, discrimination, segregation, poverty and brutality, there is no point in being patriotic in Uganda,” he added.

Briefing the parliamentary presidential affairs committee recently, Minister Tumwebaze said the bill, currently at draft stage, is to instill into all Ugandans the love for their country.

Everyone, he said, would be required by the new law to among others support all government development programs, and defend national property.

Mr Otunnu, however terms this as ‘utter fraud,’ noting that even the existing patriotism clubs in the country are there to harness ruling NRM party propaganda.

“I was recently at one of the top schools in Kampala were the patriotic club was making a presentation. All they did was sing praises to president Museveni and the First Lady Janet for the great things that they have done for this country.”

“According to them, this is all that patriotism is about,” he added.
