“It is very unfortunate that the Electoral Commission is set to conduct by-elections for the Kampala Mayoral seat assuming that they are not aware of the court case that is still going on and the several court orders that have called upon the Lord Mayor to assume his office,” lamented Oguttu.
“FDC obeys rules and we shall, therefore, not engage in any illegality well knowing that the position being declared vacant is still under question in the courts of law.”
However, on the same note, the acting party spokesperson, Nabila Ssempala said that in case government chooses to further the by-election, the opposition will seek for a combined effort to ensure that they regain the Kampala mayoral seat.
“We can’t leave the seat to be taken up by the NRM, we are much aware that though the opposition boycotts the elections, the ruling party will continue to conduct them and hence come up with a leader of their choice which will be very disastrous to the people of Kampala and the country at large.”
The Electoral Commission (EC) last week, set April 17, as the date for the by-election to fill the position that fell vacant following the impeachment of Erias Lukwago.
