check geneva;”>Shortly after the ruling was announced, the MPs – Mohammed Nsereko, Winfred Niwagaba, Barnabus Tinkasiimire and Theodore Ssekikuubo attempted to move in a convoy to downtown Kampala to join their supporters in the celebrations.
However, Police authorities told Chimpreports they realised that such an impromptu rally would be exploited by thugs to cause destruction and looting of property.
Efforts to persuade the supporters from participating in the rally did not bear fruit, compelling Police to take a robust action. The MPs were subsequently held by Police.
The Supreme Court ruling nullified “binds the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Electoral Commission from any action on this matter until the application has been disposed off.”
This implies the Electoral Commission which had set April 17 as a date for by-elections to replace the affected legislators will have to reconsider its decision.
Led by Justice Stella Arach Amoko, the five justices unanimously agreed that the expelled MPs should temporarily return to Parliament until March 28 when the same court will hear the application.
