“The elections were never supervised nor organised by UPC, they were rather organised by the Uganda National Liberation Front (UNLF) whose powers were vested in the executive which was led by the late Paul Muwanga and the vice chairman of the executive power was Yoweri Museveni,” Lucima said.

Lucima added that the alleged party, therefore, had no means of rigging the elections that it never organised; “UPC never organised the elections and how could DP rig in the favour of UPC?”

“The elections were free and fair and in any case how would DP, the organizers, rig elections in favour of UPC; why would the party rig in one place and leave out the others in which it was defeated like Buganda region,” he noted.

The party Vice president, Joseph Bossa, added that there are some people who want to divert the current debate on free and fair elections by dwelling on the events which took place 35 years ago.

“They don’t want us to debate the future of this country but rather want us to dwell on the past; the common wealth observer and subsequently the party which was alleging to have been cheated during the 1980 elections admitted that the elections were free and that allegations initially made by DP were infracted,” Bossa said.

“As far as UPC is concerned, the debate of the 1980 elections has been closed, there are those who are keeping it a live to blackmail and muzzle us against comment on the need for electoral reforms.”

He added that UPC still has a moral ground to fight for free and fair elections for the future generation of this country.
