The competition which is one of the key annual activities of the Africa Hockey Federation (AfHF), serves as a platform to identify new playing and officiating talents and to engender competition among member National Associations (NAs).

It brings together top two teams in both genders across leagues in the continent.

It is also recognised as the flagship event of the AfHF and therefore, commands a lot of attention and support among NAs.

Ghana was to host the prestigious club tournament but had to be stripped off hosting rights due to its outstanding debt to the Federations of International Hockey (FIH).

Following this, Uganda through Uganda Hockey Association (UHA) had several meetings with AfHF at which it lobbied to host this event.

Among these included; a meeting with the president of AfHF held in Kampala (August 2013), the chairman UHA travelled to Nairobi in November to attend the AfHF congress.

It is during the congress that the Executive board of the AfHF granted UHA the rights to hold the event in Kampala.

So far seven countries including Uganda, namely; Egypt, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria and Ghana have confirmed their attendance.

A total of 18 teams are expected to participate in this event.
