Denis Opio, who won a double at the National championships in the 100m and 200m categories respectively, also received the upcoming male award.
While meeting the athletes at Rwakitura, President Yoweri Museveni as such promised Shs 5m per month to every Ugandan athlete who wins Gold at the International or continental level, Silver Shs 3m, bronze Shs 1m, also monthly.
According to Ms Sarah Kagingo, the President’s Special Assistant for Communications, President Museveni also directed the Ministry of Education and Sports to construct a high-altitude training facility for athletes in Kapchorwa.
“The facility; part of Government’s plan to build internal capacity to train sportsmen, will enable several young people to exploit their talents. Utilities, electricity and water, have been connected to the site,” she noted.
Kagingo urged the delegates, who comprised athletes from all regions in Uganda and their coaches, at a dinner held in their favour “to avoid HIV AIDS”.
The dinner was also attended by the President of the Uganda Olympic Committee, William Blick.
