Usually towards Christmas season, people die in accidents as they travel to their places of origin to celebrate with their relatives.

According to the General Secretary for Uganda Bus Drivers and Allied Association, Willy Katende, normally, accidents increase during the festive season.

“This is largely caused by drivers who want to drive return journeys. They get fatigued and keep on dosing on the steering wheel hence causing such accidents,” Katende pointed out.

He continued: “We tried to talk to bus owners about this problem so that they employ more than two drivers for inter-state buses but they adamantly refused.”

Katende observed that “bus owners spoke to the Minister for transport Abraham Byandala promising him that they will employ more drivers to avoid making returns but it was a total lie”.

Uganda Bus Drivers and Allied Association, General Chairman, Hannington Kiwanuka, says that in this season, the Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura has to be vigilant about road safety and make sure that traffic police is so kin on those drivers driving without tying their seat belts to make sure that the number of deaths reduce this season.

He has also advised drivers to drive single routes and spare time to service their vehicles.
