Currently, we are holding three private guards in connection with the previous robberies in Masaka,” Kavuma said.

He adds: “At times, guards leave places where they have been deployed and go to rob places guarded by fellow guards; sometimes killing each other.”

He noted that most targeted places are fuel stations, supermarkets and wholesale shops within Masaka town, because they always have large sums of money on them.

In the past two months, four robberies were carried out in Masaka, all involving private security guards.

Last month, Petrol City fuel station in Nyendo Masaka was robbed and it is suspected that the guard attached to Askali Security Company who was on duty at this station, connived with the robbers.

Among the private security companies operating in Masaka are; SWAT, SARACEEN, SECURITY 2000, ULTIMATE, ASKALIS, among others.

In October this year, the IGP, General Kale Kayihura met with proprietors of private security companies to discuss the fate.

He advised them to always keep constant supervision after deploying the guards.

Kayihura warned against the use of one guard for both day and night.

He emphasised refresher courses and training guards every after three months.

Last month, Saracen Security Company responded by suspending 47 guards, over indiscipline, illegal use of arms and related thefts within the company.
