Makindye Residents Protest Power Blackout

It is reported that power blackouts have been the order of the day in Makindye, a situation that prompted the protests.

Power distributor, Umeme on Monday issued a statement, saying Kawuku, Bunga, Ggaba, parts of Kansanga and surrounding areas were disconnected due due to an emergency shut down to allow maintenance works to be done on that line.

“We request for your patience during this time.”

The protesters said businesses have not been running smoothly due to prolonged blackout which the residents responded to by blocking roads, burning tyres as a way of showing their anger.


In addition, residents also complained that those participating in the grasshoppers business were the only ones who could access power.


Meanwhile, police managed restore order.


Ibrahim Saiga, the DPC Katwe police station, appealed to the residents to refrain from violence, saying their greivances were being sorted.
