Darfur: Rwandan Soldier Killed In Deadly Ambush

“The Non-Commissioned Officer serving in Rwanbatt 40 (31 Infantry Battalion) was killed in line of duty, while serving the people of Darfur, through African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID),” it read in part.

The deceased peacekeeper was together with 60 RDF Soldiers escorting a convoy to Kunguru from Kabkabiya when they were ambushed by unidentified armed assailants.

RDF said the soldier “heroically confronted the assailants, but was fatally wounded. He was evacuated to Level II Hospital where he unfortunately died.”

RDF did not provide the name of the deceased, promising to communicate details later.

Several UN peacekeepers have died in the line of duty in Darfur at the hands of militia groups in the volatile area.
