The highly charged match, graced by His Highness the Omukama of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, Solomon Iguru Gafabusa, also had state Minister for Bunyoro Affairs Hon. Ernest Kiiza in attendance.

The champion team was awarded gold medals and a bull by the King of Bunyoro Kitara, together with Zakalia Lubega, CNOOC Uganda’s Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, also sponsors of the tournament for the second year running.

The first runners up, Kibanda County, were awarded silver medals and a bull while, in third position Bugangaizi County Football club were awarded bronze medals and a goat.

The Omukama of Bunyoro, while presiding over the tournament finals, expressed appreciation for CNOOC Uganda’s partnership since they set foot in Bunyoro.

He encouraged the youth to unite and work together for the development of their communities and Bunyoro in its entirety.

“We have got a good neighbour and partner in CNOOC, Uganda. They sponsored the inaugural CNOOC Bunyoro Amasaza Cup last year, as they have this year. As the people of Bunyoro, we should take this partnership forward but also use this opportunity to unite and move forward through development,” Gafabusa noted.

The tournament, in its second year, was played across all sub counties in Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom and attracted 74 teams.

Zakalia Lubega, the CNOOC Uganda Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, congratulated the winners and encouraged them to look ahead in talent development, to take on the national stage.

“We believe that the energy and talent exhibited in this tournament will inspire even more young people to develop and grow their talent further not just in Bunyoro but also to take on national and international sports stages,” Lubega said.

The state minister for Bunyoro affairs, Ernest Kiiza urged those in attendance to prioritise sports development among their children and announced government plans to facilitate schools to get fully functional sports grounds.

“Sports not only brings us together, it also promotes better health. We encourage parents therefore to encourage their children to take up sports. The Government of Uganda is also planning to allow for sports grounds at all government-aided schools. We encourage private education institutions to do the same.”
