UTAMU Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jude Lubega thanked the students for having chosen to enrol for the PhD programme at the orientation function for the PhD students, which was held on Monday 5th November 2013 at UTAMU head office Twed Towers in Kampala.

“On behalf of the PhD coordination committee from MUST and UTAMU, I promise we won’t let you down,” Prof. Lubega said.

The Director Academic Affairs, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rehema Baguma called upon students to register in the first two weeks to avoid lagging behind in the programme.

“All registration must be done with MUST which is the awarding institution of the programme,” Baguma clarified.

The Vice Chancellor Prof. Baryamureeba while addressing the PhD students during orientation told them about the potential opportunities the programme would avail to them particularly through the various partners that intend to support the programme.

Some of the notable partners that he mentioned were; University of Limpopo and the Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa.

Baryamureeba also emphasised the need for students to publish academic articles and papers in notable journals and participate in academic workshops, seminars and conferences.

“As a University, we shall do everything within our reach to ensure that you finish your PhD in three years,” he said.

Other notable UTAMU dons that graced the orientation exercise included Associate Professors Rehema Baguma, John Ngubiri and Florence Tushabe and Doctors Robert. K. Rutagyi, Drake Kyalimpa and Patrick Wakida.

Meanwhile, another orientation programme was held at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Mbarara for the students in Western Uganda.

In Mbarara, the PhD students were briefed by MUST Academic Registrar Mr. Stephen Bazirake, who mainly guided them on the registration process.

This PhD programme is a joint institutional capacity building initiative between UTAMU and MUST and it is intended to address the educational gaps at doctoral level in the East African Region.
