DRC government spokesperson, Lambert Mende today told press the M23 rebels had been completely defeated, with several militants surrendering or fleeing to Rwanda and Uganda.

He said Makenga had moved to either of the two countries.

However, sources said the M23 fighters were still holed up in Chanzu and other mountains in Virunga.

M23 President, Bertrand Bisiimwa said government wants the rebel group to declare losing the battle and ceasing operations as a Movement as Kinshasha’s pre-condition for signing the peace agreement.

However, Bisiimwa wondered how DRC would sign a peace deal with a non-existent Movement.

Several African leaders are meeting in Pretoria, South Africa, to find a political solution to the crisis in the restive eastern DRC.

They on Monday night agreed to a cessation of hostilities to pave way for the peace deal which is expected to be signed within five days.

The M23 broke ranks in April 2012, accusing President Joseph Kabila of failing to return Congolese refugees from foreign countries, discrimination and entrenched corruption in the army and lack of social services in Kivu.
