Okumu came to the lime light in 1998 after he was selected as the best defender of the year in the Copa Coca Cola competitions which took place in Mbarara were he was playing for St Joseph College Liyabi, Gulu.
He later joined St Leos Kyegobe in Fort Portal under the stewardship of Fr. Ryan.
In 1999 he joined Nile football club in Jinja up to 2011; it was here that he was able to enroll at Nagalama Islamic school under the scholarship of Hajji Kakeeto.
Okumu passed away on Monday in a road accident
At Ndejje he combined both football and studies which enabled him to pursue a degree in Business Administration majoring in Accountancy.
He was later enrolled by National Water and Sewerage Corporation as a trainee before being accepted at permanent staff.
He later enrolled for the Masters degree in Ndejje. Having been an old student, the tutors convinced him to stay back and train the university football team considering that he was more experienced at club level.
Okumu’s relatives could not hold back tears
He was the one who trained the Ndejje University team that is playing in the FUFA Super Lleague and the East African inter University games
He has trained Ndejje football team for the last three years.
Okumu, his wife Maureen Okumu and a daughter only identified as Mary, perished in a motor accident which occurred at Katuugo Village after his vehicle Toyota Premio crushed into a trailer which had parked by the roadside.

He has left behind a widow and other children. The burial will take place tomorrow in Latinye Village Gulu district at 3.00pm
