Mwesigye had been on remand for aggravated robbery however on 13 February, 2013 while coming from Kabale referral hospital, with the help of another, they kidnapped a police officer who was escorting him and dumped him in Rukungiri district.

This happened when on their way to prison, Mwesigye asked the prison warder to let him greet a driver of a saloon car who they had met at Kigongi village. However, after ‘greeting’ him, the driver offered to drop them to the prison.

However to the warder’s surprise, they instead drove towards Mbarara on entering and dropped the prison warder in unknown place in Rukungiri district after roughing him up.

Meanwhile according to Nabakooba, the suspect was among those arrested on Tuesday by Mbarara police for stealing a motor vehicle.

“It so happened that these people are a big racket. They drive their saloon car rotating Kampala, Mbarara, Fortportal and Kampala pretending to be doing taxi operations but after passengers entering, they drive off reach somewhere and rob him/her and disappear,” warned Nabakooba.

She added that they also keep on changing number plates “on those vehicles they use so that they are not identified”.
