“Kabale police have been hunting for this man after he escaped from Ndorwa government prison where he had been remanded over aggravated robbery,” he said.
Matte said on February 13, 2013, Mwesigye was being escorted by a prison warder from Kabale Referral hospital where he had gone for treatment before running away with a driver of an unidentified salon car.
“The two men met the salon driver parked along Kigongi road and he offered them a life to the prison but as soon as they entered the car, the driver whisked them away towards Mbarara and the warder was dropped in unknown place in Rukungiri district after beating him up,” narrated Matte.
He noted that it is a gang of thieves who drive salon cars and keep rotating around Kampala, Mbarara, Fort Portal pretending to be taxi operators but after passengers enter the vehicle, they take them to unknown places and rob them all their property.
“They also keep changing number plates on these vehicles so that they can camouflage from the police,” added Matte.
The police officer has warned the passengers and the public against using cars which are not labeled for taxi use.
Meanwhile, a case has been opened under file number CRB 2462/2013 at Kabale police station.
