Police Rescues Baby From Pit, Arrests Mother

It is the local security personnel that informed the police in the area to come to the baby’s rescue.

The baby was then evacuated to Kiziguro hospital where it’s receiving treatment.

After carrying our investigations, police discovered that it was the baby’s mother Donatha Uwiringiyimana, who allegedly dumped it shortly after giving birth.

Uwiringiyimana, whose pregnancy was known by area residents, has been arrested after being found with no pregnancy.

The Eastern Region Police Spokesperson, Supt. Emmanuel Karuranga says, the baby’s mother was first rushed to Kiziguro hospital for treatment before being charged with infanticide.

It should be noted that under article 143 of the penal code, any person who kills his or her biological or adopted child shall commit infanticide.

Infanticide is punishable with a life imprisonment.

The father of the baby is yet to be known, but Karuranga says they are still tracing him.

He has urged girls and women to avoid unwanted pregnancies and appealed to Rwandans to report any domestic violence, which lead to such inhuman acts.
