Police said in a press statement that a “grenade went off on Friday evening in Gitega Sector of Kigali’s Nyarugenge District near Nyabugogo abattoir commonly known as “marathon.”

“Two people died on the spot, two others were seriously injured while 30 others sustained minor injuries. Security and medical services arrived at the site shortly after the explosion,” it further noted.

The injured were immediately evacuated to the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK) and Kacyiru Police Hospital (KPH), where they are receiving emergency care.

The blast scene was last night cordoned-off to facilitate ongoing investigation.

Rwanda National Police urged the public to remain calm and to cooperate with security services to help ensure that whoever is behind the blast is brought to book.

“Rwanda National Police conveys condolences to the families of victims and is working around the clock to bring to justice all those responsible for this criminal act.”

No one is yet to claim responsibility for the blasts.

Kigali has in recent years been a target of grenade attacks. Government has always accused the DRC-based genocidal FDLR militia of masterminding behind the attacks.
