According to four presidential decrees issued on Tuesday night, Kiir fired his Vice President Riek Machar, all cabinet ministers and their deputies and police commissioners.

Machar was blamed for threatening to cause divisions in the country and using inciting language at public functions.

The ruling party’s secretary general and chief negotiator on post succession issues with Sudan, Pagan Amum was also knifed over corruption and inciting public anger.

Kiir ordered an investigation committee headed by the speaker of the parliament and deputy chairman of the party, James Wani Igga, to probe Pagan’s source of wealth.

Observers say this is the largest cabinet reshuffle in the history of South Sudan which is likely to restore confidence among donors that Kiir is determined to tackle corruption.

The president also directed the under-secretaries of all ministries to immediately run South Sudan’s ministries until further notice.

In January this year, Kiir fired 35 military chiefs in what appeared an extraordinary military shakeup in the volatile country.

The consequences of Kiir’s actions remain unclear. However, he remains in firm control of the army, having replaced the old and corrupt guard six months ago.
