“After 2-3 days of intermittent fighting across the border in eastern DRC the situation has calmed with suggestions that the groups involved, including ADF- Nalu and FARDC, are reorganizing,” the statement seen today reads in part.

“The Ugandan side of the border remains calm with no security incidents reported and UPDF maintain a presence all along the border.”

ADF recently attacked and overrun Congolese army units in Kamango, Eastern DRC, sending thousands of refugees into Uganda.

The Refugee body noted that Bubukwanga transit centre had been put up with the help of the office of the Prime Minister in Kampala and other agencies to help accommodate the refugees in Bundibugyo district.

The UNHCR site planner therefore noted that the transit centre has a capacity of 15,000 people and by Tuesday 22 July, 267 people had been registered, bringing the total population to 15,714 refugees.

However UNHCR noted that there are many people camped along the border and are reluctant to the transit centre as they prefer to stay at the border to monitor the situation back in the DRC.

It was also noted that there are 93 unaccompanied children and further stressed that 25 children had also been reunited with their families.

“75 metric tons of WFP food is currently available at the transit centre and this will last for another 2 weeks,’’ noted UNHCR who further noted that a truck is soon arriving from Kampala with supplies for 20,000 people for 10 days.

It was also noted that UPDF had brought some medicines that could last for 10 ten days from the district stores on top of the 2 caesarean sections offered to Bundibugyo hospital.

5,047 children have also been immunized, according to the refugee body.

However, UNHCR noted that there is a gap in water supply of 84,000 litres and therefore assistance is needed in providing water trucking to the transit centre and the adjacent health facility.

“The Ugandan side of the border remains calm with no security incidents reported and UPDF maintain a presence all along the border.
