He said that the rapid growth, which places MTN data subscriptions at close to 1.6million, up from 863,000 in the same period last year has been driven mainly by newly introduced technologies which offer high speeds, innovation, coverage, and value propositions that are affordable and tailored to cover every customer needs up to 100Mbps with 4G LTE.
“Since the beginning of the year, we have rolled out WiFi MTN Hotspots, 21.6Mbps, 42Mbps and 4GLTE. We also give our customers 15MB worth of Free Internet free every month and we are constantly reaching out to our customers through various activations and great device deals,” said Fonternel.
Speaking at the opening of an MTN expo in Gulu, Fonternel said that the biggest growth is in mobile Internet because of the increase in smart phones, and internet enabled portable devices such as Ipads and tabs, a space that MTN is well positioned to play in.
“Many people are starting to use second screens, in addition to television, already talking of a post PC world and therefore content previously limited to televisions and PCs now has to be delivered via Laptops, Notebooks, Tablets and Mobiles,” he said.
“This requires high speed technologies like 3G+ and 4G LTE where MTN continues to lead the investment in infrastructure which we have already deployed in Uganda,” Fonternel explained.
MTN is significantly investing into Internet education and as part of this initiative is hosting MTN Expos across the country.
MTN Uganda is the leading investor in technology with a planned investment of over $70million in 2013 this year alone to upgrade infrastructure and expand coverage to rural areas.
Last year, the company invested over $80million during 2012.
