InfoDev’s Mobile Innovation program, in partnership with Sweden, is the initiator of the mAgri Challenge.
In this challenge, five teams will be inivited to a Mobile Startup Camp in November 2013 for a chance to refine their models and practice pitching their businesses to angel investors.
They mainly focused on the elements of past competitions that worked well, and learned from those that did not.
“Mobile innovation in the agricultural sector faces challenges in that while there is a proliferation of mobile apps that provide market information, few of these have been adopted widely across the African continent, making it difficult to achieve scale and profitability,” states InfoDev Innovation.
Another major challenge is that despite proven benefits of mobile agri apps, the mobile entrepreneurship community and the agribusiness community often suffer from a lack of obvious linkages and ways to collaborate.
InfoDev Innovation intends to support mobile technology entrepreneurs as they take their products all the way down the path from mind to market – from the idea stage to a point of sustainable growth.
“We ensure that our initiatives are linked to other opportunities along that path, to maximize each entrepreneur’s chance of success.”
With every successful, growing new company, entrepreneurs create high-value jobs that contribute to their country’s economies, reduce brain drain and improve competitiveness.
The mAgri Challenge is an opportunity to identify entrepreneurs developing innovative mobile agri apps in Africa, and provide them with additional resources to further commercialize their products.
This journey from mind to market was at the forefront of the design process for the mAgri Challenge, where we relied on a number of lessons drawn from our own and others’ experiences with mobile app competitions.
