The soldiers were reportedly cut off as M23 battled to control a strategic point near Mount Muchanga in Kanyarucinya just 6 kilometers from Goma.

This is not the first time DRC troops are fleeing to Rwanda and other neighbouring countries particularly Uganda.

In April, M23 combatants struck and captured the Bunagana border point, sending hundreds of FARDC to Uganda.

Early this year, a splinter group of M23 fled to Rwanda after being overpowered by the Movement under the command of Brig Sultan Makenga.

Rwanda accuses FARDC of backing FDLR, a rebel group that draws most of its combatants from perpetrators of the 1994 genocide in which one million people were killed.

There has been sporadic fighting in areas near the Provincial town of Goma, with FARDC launching military operations against M23.

UNHCR says at least 600 Congolese refugees have been crossing to Kisoro in Uganda on a weekly basis since the heavy fighting broke out late last week.
