In an interview after his release, Basalirwa condemned the arrests and noted that it was unconstitutional.
“We were arrested and told that it was an order from above not to allow us go to Kabale,’’ stressed Basalirwa.
He therefore noted that this was a sign of “dictatorship by the government.”
However, the OC Nsangi police station ASP Lule Patrick noted that Basalirwa and his colleagues had not been arrested but stressed that it was only their driver who had been charged.
“The driver was arrested for failure to stop at a checkpoint when ordered by police. He was released on police bond while Basalirwa had no case to answer after the police searched the car registration number UAR 179Y that they were travelling in,” stressed Lule.
Meanwhile, Munyagwa, Erias Lukwago and Ingrid Turinawe who appeared before Kabale Magistrate’s Court on charged related to holding an illegal assembly in the district have been released on a cash bail of shs500, 000 each.
Police earlier used teargas to disperse opposition supporters who had gathered at the court premises.
