“The suspects are still being screened by the police and other security personnel at Mbarara police station headquarters to identify who are the core criminals,” said Abilu.


He said the crackdown was aimed at tracing the hard core criminals operating in Kakooba division in Mbarara municipality who have in the recent days claimed the lives of many people and have been hindering the security of the area.


“They will be screened thoroughly such that we remain with wrong elements and help us get the others that escaped the operation,” added Abilu.


This follows the murder of the World Food Programme (WFP) official on Monday night by unknown assailants as he headed to his home in Kakoba division from a music concert in Mbarara town with his friends.


Andrew Mpubani, working as Assistant Monitoring Personnel with WFP was attacked by unidentified assailants and stubbed to death using a sharp machete outside his home in Jesus Care zone, Kakooba Division.


His body was on Tuesday morning found lying in the pool of cold blood by the area residents.


Abilu said that operations are still going on to uproot wrong elements from the area who have become a menace to the society.


“We shall continue with our operations so that such criminals are excluded in our vicinity,” noted Abilu.


Meanwhile, Police in Kanungu district are holding in detention a highway robber identified as Jona Mujuni, a resident of Katojo Nyarugunda in Kambuga Sub County,Kanungu district.


The district Police Commander Edison Muhangi told this website today that the arrest follows a string of highway robberies on buses traveling at night and traders.


“This has prompted police interventions where so far three guns have been recovered and another unidentified robber has been shot dead by the police on operations,” said Muhangi.


Police revealed that Mujuni had a special room in his house where even his wife and children were forbidden from entering.


Muhangi said that the suspect was allegedly responsible for shooting two people Kambaho and Bimbona all residents of the same area who were murdered.
