However, the NWSC laboratory experts were called in to carry out tests and investigate whether the water from the main tank was contaminated.
“We would like to dispel rumours going on of poisoning of our water. We would like to assure you that our water is very safe for human consumption,” reports NSWC.
It is estimated that more than 120,000 people in Kasese district have been affected by this scare.
The town’s Mayor, Godfrey Kabyanga confirmed an investigation into the reports was underway.
“It is true; we are carrying out an investigation. National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) laboratory experts are doing tests on the water from the main tank that supplies the town and in three hours we shall be able to establish whether reports of poison are authentic,” said
Kabyanga on Monday morning.
The mayor was addressing Kasese residents on Guide Fm radio station.
Kabyanga said if true, he could not rule out “foul play because such acts are committed by dangerous elements who want to hurt society.”
Chimpreports understands some individuals on Monday night went house by house, warning people against using the water which they said was laced with poison.
A police official said water supply to the municipality has been held and security at the main tank tightened.
“Remember these are rumours. But tests are being carried out and we shall soon come up with a common position,” the official who preferred anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to press, said.
