At least 29 people who were sustained life-threatening wounds are admitted in Ward 3B of the hospital.

Hospital officials said chances of surviving death remain slim for the victims considering that even their internal organs were hugely damaged.

Police have also tightened security as grief-struck relatives struggle to retrieve bodies of their family members from heaps of charred bodies.

10:28: Officials at Mulago National Referral Hospital tell Chimpreports that the death toll of Namungona road accident victims has now risen to 31.

At least two more people passed away on Sunday morning to critical injuries.

7:57: Police confirm that 29 people perished in the Namungona accident on Saturday night.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander, Andrew Kaweesi describes the incident as a “national tragedy.”

“We can now state that 29 people died in this terrible accident. 29 others are still nursing wounds at Mulago National Referral Hospital,” Kaweesi tells this website at the scene of the accident in Namungona on Sunday morning.

Eyewitnesses tell Chimpreports that a Toyota Noah brand car, at around 8:30am, knocked the fuel tanker from behind.

This led to a spill of fuel on the tarmac. Boda boda riders and passersby swiftly gathered containers to collect the fuel for personal use.

“One of the boda boda riders was smoking. That’s how fire started before engulfing the whole area. Boda bodas and cars on the road were not spared. It was a terrible blaze,” recounts Anita Kyomuhendo, 32, a resident of Namungona who claims to have witnessed the fire destroy lives and property worth millions of shillings.

Kaweesi, scene investigators, traffic officers and other security officials are now at the scene.

6:45am: Police are investigating the cause of a road accident along the Northern bypass in which at least 30 perished.

Reports indicate a fuel tanker which was involved in the accident caught fire before the raging flames consumed cars near it.

President Yoweri Museveni, who is attending the Smart Partnership International Dialogue in Tanzania, has since regretted the accident and that he is closely following the unfolding events.

“Dear Ugandans, I have learnt with great shock of the tragedy in which vehicles have been burnt by a fuel tanker at Namungona causing loss of lives. I am closely monitoring efforts of the Police and health workers at the scene,” said Museveni, according to his Special Communications Assistant, Sarah Kagingo.
