He was at first detained at Kampala Central Police Station (CPS) before being transferred to Kiira Division Police Station.
Eyewitnesses said it took the intervention of top FDC shots especially Maj Gen (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu, Ingrid Turinawe and Francis Mwijukye.
After several hours of bitter confrontations with Police, FDC shots managed to secure Besigye’s release at around 9pm.
FDC sources said Muntu telephoned Police boss, Gen Kale Kayihura, warning him of grave consequences if Besigye “sleeps in your cells tonight.”
He also said FDC supporters would not leave the police station “without Besigye.”
It is thought after consultations, Kayihura ordered Besigye’s release.
He was later escorted to his residence in Kasangati, Wakiso District.
