She stressed that agriculture was the key to food security, growth and peace in South Sudan, and describing agriculture as more than food, and central “to the process of healing our society.”
Sue Lautze, the head of the FAO’s South Sudan office, described South Sudan’s entry into FAO as the “latest milestone in the country’s long journey towards full independence and sovereignty”.
The FAO, partnered with the South Sudan government under such initiatives as the Sudan Productive Capacity Recovery Program has assisted in development of the human, organizational and physical capacities of the Ministries of Agriculture and Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries in several of South Sudan states.
It is currently partnering with the government to implement the Agriculture and Food Security Information System, a three year project funded by the European Union.
