In his remarks, the incoming Internal Affairs minister, Gen. Aronda Nyakairima noted that regional forces are the only solution to the instabilities in Africa.

He gave an example, “In the last 60 years, Europe has been one of the most peaceful continents in the world courtesy of the NATO.”

Nyakairima therefore called upon for the formation of strong forces like ECOWAS to ensure there is peace in the region.

The force, whose establishment followed a decision by the summit of the African Union held in Addis Ababa in 2004 to create the East African Standby brigade, was established as a regional mechanism to provide capability for rapid deployment of forces, intervention, peace support plus stability operations and enforcement.

The ‘Mashariki Salama’ contains peacekeepers from Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Seychelles, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda comprising 1288 men and officers both military and police plus civilians.

However, the force is faced with many challenges as noted by the Minister of Defense, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga who stressed that political will of many politicians is a big challenge.

He also called upon for support from African leaders in order to realize the dreams of the force.
